How to Become a Filer in Pakistan: The Complete 2026 Walkthrough
Becoming a filer is mostly form filling, yet thousands pay the non filer premium every year because nobody laid the steps out. Here they are.
Step 1: Get your NTN
Register on the FBR IRIS portal with your CNIC, a working mobile number in your name and an email address. For salaried individuals the CNIC itself effectively serves as the NTN once registered. Businesses add their business particulars.
Step 2: File the return that is due
Filer status comes from filing, not from registering. File the income tax return for the latest completed tax year, along with the wealth statement where required. Salaried filers with simple affairs can often complete this in an evening once documents are gathered.
Step 3: Check the Active Taxpayer List
The ATL is updated weekly. After your return is processed and any late filing surcharge is paid, your CNIC appears on the list, and that is what banks, car dealers and property offices actually check.
What being a filer changes
- Lower withholding tax on banking transactions, vehicle registration, property dealings and dividends.
- Eligibility that non filers are progressively losing, from vehicle purchases to certain investments.
- A documented profile that makes loans and visas easier to support.
The honest effort estimate
First time: a few hours with documents ready, or hand it to a professional for a modest fee. Every following year is faster. The non filer premium, by contrast, repeats forever.
